What does ECDL offer you?

A qualification in IT using Microsoft Office programmes recognised throughout Europe.

You get up to 100 hours of training which includes tutor-led classes, self-study sessions and support from trained staff.

Module 1: Security for I.T. Users (Part I)

Understand the security risks associated with computer use and familiarising the user with ways to protect against such risks:

  • Security awareness
  • Protecting your PC
  • Information Security
  • Technology Security

Module 2: I.T. User Fundamentals - Using Windows XP (Part I)

Demonstrate knowledge and competence in using the basic functions of a PC and its operating system:

  • Manage and organise files, directories, and folders
  • Copy, move and delete files and folders
  • Use desktop icons and use Windows
  • Use search features, editing tools and print management facilities within the operating system
  • Security and anti virus protection

Module 3: Word Processing software (Part II)

Using Microsoft Office Word 2003
Demonstrate the ability to use a word-processing application on PC:

  • Creating, formatting and finishing a word-processed document ready for distribution
  • Competence in using some of the more advanced features, e.g.  Creating standard tables, using pictures and images within a document, importing objects and using mail merge tools

Module 4: Spreadsheet software (Part II)

Using Microsoft Office Excel 2003

Understand the basic concepts of spreadsheets and demonstrate the ability to use a spreadsheet application on a PC: 

  • Developing, formatting and using a spreadsheet
  • Standard mathematical and logical operations
  • Competence in using some of the more advanced features such as importing objects, creating graphs and charts.

Module 5: Database software (Part II)

Using Microsoft Office Access 2003

Understand the basic concepts of databases and demonstrate the ability to use a database on a PC:

  • Section 1: Design and plan a simple database using a standard database package.
  • Section 2: Demonstrate retrieval of information from an existing database by using query, select and sort tools, create and modify reports.

Module 6: Presentation software (Part II)

Using Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003:

  • Creating, formatting and preparing presentations for distribution and display
  • Creating a variety of presentations for different target audiences or situations
  • Using graphics and charts
  • Slide show effects 

Module 7a: Web Browsing (Part I)

Using Internet Explorer 8.0:

  • Internet theory and security
  • Recognising the screen layout and views
  • Using hyperlinks, web addresses, bookmarks, search engines and subject directories
  • Completing web forms
  • Changing options
  • Saving web pages and copying web objects
  • Printing web pages and search results
  • Downloading files 

Module 7b: Communication (Part I)

Using Outlook 2003 (E-mail):  

  • Creating, editing, sending and reading emails
  • Attaching, opening and saving attachments
  • Changing message priority
  • Using address book and creating distribution lists
