Advanced Apprenticeship in Children and Young People’s Workforce (Level 3)

 

Who is the qualification for?

The Children and Young People’s Workforce Apprenticeship is ideal for anybody who is working with children from birth up to 16-years-old - or their families.

This Apprenticeship is designed for people who do not want to pursue a general education route but who are still keen to keep learning as they work. They are a great way of earning and gaining workplace experience whilst also achieving nationally-recognised qualifications. You can start this apprenticeship from 16 years old and enter employment in a nursery or childcare environment, but you will need a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check to be carried out by your prospective employer before you start.

Apprentices should be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week. To complete the Advanced Apprenticeship will take 9 to 12 months.


Advanced Apprenticeship Framework

 In completing the Apprenticeship at L3 the learner will achieve the following qualifications:

  • Advanced Apprenticeship in Children and Young People’s Workforce Level 3
  • L2 Award in Employment Responsibilities and Rights in Health, Social Care OR Children and Young People's Settings
  • L3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce
  • Functional Skills in Maths, English & ICT Level 2
     

Exemptions

You are entitled to Functional Skills exemptions if you have the following qualifications.

FS in Maths              Either GCSE grade C or above or Functional Skills in Maths (L2)

FS in English            Either GCSE grade C or above or Functional Skills in Maths (L2)

FS in ICT                  Functional Sills in ICT (L2)

 
There are three Pathways available in this qualification. You need to consider the optional Pathways which are available and decide which one best suits your aims and aspirations.

Early Learning and ChildcarePathway

Often working in a supervisory role (but not necessarily) within a nursery/early learning and childcare setting, providing care for young children

Childminder

Providing care for children in the childminder's own home. Working without supervision

Nursery Nurse / Nursery

Delivering the Early Years Foundation Stage within a maintained school setting

 

Children and Young People's Social Care Pathway

Job title(s)

Residential Care

Worker

Working in settings such as residential care homes, residential special schools, therapeutic communities, secure children's homes. Responsible for promoting a caring, healthy, stimulating, safe and secure environment for the children and young people in their care.

Foster Carer

Provides a family life for children and young people that cannot live with their own families, either on a long or short term basis. They are supported by supervising social workers and work closely with other professionals in social services, education, health care and sometimes the legal system.

Short Break Carer

Provides opportunities for disabled children and young people to try new/fun activities and to be more independent. They may provide short break care in their own home, the home
of the child or young person, or in the community.

 

Learning and Development Support Services Pathway

Learning mentors

Provide support for young individuals who may have for example particular or special needs in their learning.

 

Qualification structure

 To achieve the Apprenticeship in Children and Young People Workforce – level 3, the apprentices need to complete a total of minimum 65 credits.
